Copper is an excellent conductor of energy, from electricity to the mystical subtle energies emanating from higher planes. Copper is said to enhance and transmit thoughts, even over long distances. Copper also enhance the properties of the other crystals around it, so using copper in conjunction with other stones is highly beneficial to the wearer.
Electroforming is a very time intensive process that produces unique results with each piece having it’s own beautiful characteristics. Each piece takes 24-48 hours just to create the copper plating, and days of prep work before and after receiving that beautiful copper energy. Lots of love and attention goes into each of my copper electroformed pieces, and I hope you enjoy them!
Here’s a little bit about the Mendenhall glacier and glacier silt!
Mendenhall Glacier is located in Juneau, Alaska, and is one of the 38 glaciers that flow from the Juneau Icefield. The ice travels 13 miles from the icefield to where the glacier empties into Mendenhall Lake. Mendenhall Glacier ice may be constantly moving down the valley, but unfortunately this glacier is receding at an alarming rate.
Glacier silt is collected and used in a variety of ways, from exfoliating soap and facial masks to jewelry like I have created.
What is glacier silt?
Glacier silt originates as rocks and boulders from mountainous valleys. As it snows on the ice field, the weight of the snow compacts into dense, heavy ice and gravity forces that giant river of ice (the glacier) down those mountainous valleys. As the glacier ice slowly makes its way down, the dense ice scrapes along side the valley walls, picking up rocks and boulders and dirt along the way. After taking hundreds of years to travel down the valley, those boulders and rocks get crushed and tilled up into a fine, soft ‘silt’.
I collected this glacier silt by hiking the strenuous but beautiful 6.5 mile out-and-back trail that leads to the face of the magnificent Mendenhall Glacier. Once reaching the glacier, the silt is plentiful!
I love Alaska and glaciers with all my heart, and adding this silt into my wearable art is one way I can share a piece of my Alaskan home with the world.
